#003: How to Find Your Audience, Get Serious About Content and Build Your Email List: An Interview with Marie Forleo [Podcast]

Today I’m beyond excited to introduce you to a mentor of mine and a great friend, Marie Forleo! Marie is not only a bestselling author, entrepreneur, and online marketer, she is also the founder of an award-winning weekly online show, Marie TV.

With nothing more than a dream, a laptop, and passion, Marie has created a multi-million dollar empire from scratch. She’s even been interviewed by Oprah on Super Soul Sunday, where Oprah referred to her “as a thought leader for the next generation.”

I can trace my own online success directly to Marie, who had a huge impact on me as I transitioned from working with Tony Robbins into venturing out and starting my own business.

In this episode of The Online Marketing Made Easy Podcast, Marie shares her own inspiring success story with us, and also provides some tips and strategies which will help take your own business to the next level.

In this episode, here’s what we’ll cover:

  • How Marie got her start and what she does in her business.
  • How she made a living while she pursued her passions.
  • The conventional wisdom she chose to ignore.
  • How to quiet self-doubt while building your business.
  • Advice for those struggling to find their own voice.
  • A simple brain exercise that is a great creative workout.
  • How to figure out who your ideal audience is.
  • How to streamline content creation so it’s not so overwhelming or painful.
  • Marie’s signature program, B-School.

Amy, this one reminded me of the Mastery Book by Robert Greene. He mentioned that the path to mastery is to pursue what you’re passionate about, taking all of your previous skills and creating your own unique niche. Marie nailed it because she is passionate about many things, so proved that we don’t have to master everything all at once. Life itself is a journey to mastery.

On finding your voice, I’ve also recommended that women take the Fascination Report by Sally Hogshead (Derek from Social Triggers interviewed her) http://www.howtofascinate.com/ and discover their brand personality http://www.herowithin.com/. Let us know which one you are if you find time to choose!

I first discovered Marie last year before she ran B School and have been a huge fan ever since. I did not register last year as I was so busy with converting my website to WordPress, trying to learn and set up all the social media platforms, and learning about blogging I was in serious overwhelm mode. I just did not feel I could fit one more thing in or my head was going to explode. I knew I was not going to be able to give it 100% to get the full benefit out of the course, or to “play full out” like you say. I am hearing so many great things from you, Laura Roeder, and others that I think I really need to take a closer look at the course this year. I am feeling not so overwhelmed (most of the time) and would for sure be a able to devote full effort on the training. I will watch for the registration dates. Now that I have all the background set -up done I am ready to drive traffic and grow my list.

Great job Amy! Loved it. Keep the series going. The idea on batching creative content creation is so helpful. G+d it. Thanks.

Lana! I am just so happy to hear this because knowing you and your business, I think this would be a great fit for you – especially because you are out of the “super overwhelmed” space. I am going to send out an email on Feb 20th about my special B-School Bonus Experience and would love for you to be a part of that small group. It would give us a chance to work together again! So make sure to look out for that email :-)

Thanks for the post, Dee! I will look into those links!

I agree. We can get pretty overwhelmed and I find that there’s times I’m “in the flow”, so try to knock out 2 podcasts or blog posts at the same time. My interview show is batched in 2 interviews at a time.

I’m an introvert, so really lose my energy after two interviews. I tried doing three one day and am glad we ended up needing to move it.

I LOVE THIS!!!!! So perfect and great — thank you!!!

You’d love it Lana! I joined, but you are right about being able to focus. I made a commitment to myself and the program to take time to really sit down and plan instead of tackling one fire or chasing one tactic after another.

Amy’s private group is helpful because there’s thousands in the main program. It helps to have a subgroup that’s connected with each other through someone like Amy.
