A Story That Transforms 🤝

All successful courses have 2 things in common — they solve a specific problem and deliver on a specific promise. 

Once you’re clear on what you want to teach, it’s time to dig into the specifics of  (1) WHY this is a problem in the lives of the people you want to help and (2) what realistic promise you can offer based on your experience. 

Problems show up in more ways than one, so I want you to come at this from all angles. 

Here’s an example from one of my students who turned her personal process into a successful digital course: 

Meet Casey McGuire, a wife, a mom, and a successful corporate employee. 

But Casey was also something else. Her drinking became all-consuming, so she waved her white flag and hired a sobriety coach.

Casey never planned on helping people with their sobriety issues, but she found she had the right words to help high-achieving women who also had an issue with drinking, just like she had.

Casey uses her personal experience to solve a specific problem for her students – she helps them identify feelings of inadequacy in their work and home life that cause them to drink in order to cope.

So what about Casey’s promise? She promises to help busy women quit drinking with the framework, strategy, tools, and support found within her digital course.

The outcome? As of this May, Casey has helped more than 770 women with their sobriety (and earned more than $275,000!)

Here’s the thing about creating a course based on your own personal experience of doing something… you likely don’t have a perfectly documented process. Heck, maybe you were just figuring things out as you went along. 

That’s absolutely okay! Because step 2 is all about emptying the folders of your brain and putting what you know onto paper. 

Here’s what you’ll do — grab a notebook and jot down everything you did to achieve the result that you want to teach. Every little step. They don’t all need to be in order yet, and they don’t all need to be essential. The goal here is to get an idea of what you did so you can share your process with others. 

Once you’ve written down everything you can think of, go ahead and cross off anything non-essential. 

For example, if you went through 25 failed batches before you finally created the perfect strawberry preserves, then you can help your students skip the flubs by condensing what you learned! 

Once you’ve crossed off the non-essentials, transfer each step of your process to its own Post-it note. One step per Post-it.

Then grab yourself some wall space and put your notes in order of what needs to happen first to achieve the end result. 

Tada! You’ve just started the process of outlining your course.

Creating a course is a big undertaking with BIG potential. Making space in your calendar over the course of a few months is essential if you want your course to go from idea to reality. 

Open your calendar right now and block off at least a few hours each week for the next 60 days to devote to creating your course. 

(Don’t worry about HOW you’ll create it yet. I’ll help you out with that.)

But the easiest way to commit to doing the work each week is to get crystal clear on WHY you want to do this. 

Try answering these 2 questions: 

1. What results would make me feel purposeful? 
2. What results would make me feel abundant? 

One of my students, Brianna Firestone, created a digital course that helped her live with purpose by helping others get out of debt AND create a profitable business that ensured she’d be able to live the life she always wanted. 

Brianna took her personal experience of eliminating $50k worth of debt and started teaching the emotional and financial habits that helped her get there. 

Her purpose: to teach other women how to budget & take control of their spending, just like she had. 

Her profit: So far, Brianna’s generated $21,000 in course sales and is consistently adding 250–300 new potential students per month to her email list!
