Doubt and uncertainty don’t get to run the show when you have evidence that people are interested in picking up what you’re putting down.
I know it’s tempting to go full steam ahead and create a course — because let’s face it, you need to make money in order to prove to yourself that this online business dream isn’t just a dream.
To use a tired but succinct analogy: you can’t put the cart before the horse. Or in this case, the course before the list.
Think of it this way: you wouldn’t open up a gluten-free bakery in a ghost town, right?
No matter how decadent your mango matcha cronuts are, if there’s no one to buy them, you won’t stay open for very long.
To really flourish, you’d want to set up shop in a booming metropolis full of foodies (whose phones eat first) and who are ready to pull out their wallets for a treat from your tasty pâtisserie, right?

A lead magnet is a FREE resource (like a short guide, video training, checklist, chart, etc.) that someone needs to exchange their email address for in order to receive.
“But Amy, how do I know which type of lead magnet to create?”
Lead magnets (also known as freebies) are like the restaurant scene in downtown Nashville.
There’s no shortage of options — you get to choose based on your favorite cuisine, how long you want to sit in a restaurant, what the wait time is, and most importantly, what your dinner guests are craving. (Thai anyone?)
When it comes to choosing your lead magnet, your decision really comes down to 2 things:
- Your audience
What is it that your audience really wants and needs? Finding this out is vital to creating a lead magnet that converts like a dream.
- How much time can you realistically devote to creating your lead magnet?
I’ll be totally honest with you, some lead magnets are WAY more time consuming than others.
This quiz, for example, wasn’t something I could easily whip up in a few hours. Something like a cheat sheet, a checklist, or a free guide, is far more approachable if you’re just starting out.
Here are some different lead magnet ideas along with a quick time-investment breakdown…

Remember how we talked about how you wouldn’t set up shop in a ghost town and expect to have hoards of customers?
Well, the same goes for your lead magnet.
It’s not a “set it and forget it” type deal. You need to make sure people are seeing your lead magnet or else how will they know it exists?
This is great prep work for creating a course because it forces you to get visible. The more eyeballs, the more new leads.
Here are a few ways you can drive traffic to your sparkly new lead magnet:
- Use your website to promote your lead magnet by having an opt-in form or a pop-up on every page so it’s easy for visitors to sign up.
- Share it on social media and make sure to let your target audience know what’s in it for them.
- Promote your lead magnet using Live video (Facebook, Instagram, or wherever your ideal customer spends time online.)
- Write a guest blog post or get interviewed on a podcast and along with other great information, tell people about your awesome lead magnet.
The most important piece of the list building puzzle is to keep showing up. List building isn’t something you do once and forget about, it’s an ongoing practice that needs TLC each and every day.
Keep offering your value and expertise in the places where your target audience hangs out. Find out what their problems are and give them the solution. Lead from a place of service, and you’ll move mountains.
This is the strategy I’ve used to build an email list of over 250,000 wonderful entrepreneurs, and guess what? I started in the same place as you are right now.

There are 3 magic questions you should be asking all new subscribers:
- What are you struggling with most in relation to [your area of expertise, like weight loss, romantic relationships, increasing your income, etc.]?
- How would your life change if that were no longer the case…?
- Which of the following are you most interested in learning more about…[list out your different course topics ideas]?
So shake off any perfectionism or Imposter Syndrome and simply start introducing yourself as someone who can help. (Because you can!)
