Episode 76: Nedra Glover Tawwab: Stop Doing Work That’s Not Yours

September 8, 2026

How Hyper-Independence Caps Your Revenue, and What to Hand Off First

Being good at something has never been a reason to keep doing it. Nedra Glover Tawwab has three questions that tell you what should stay yours, and she asks them in this episode.

You can build a business where every decision waits on you, where projects stall until you weigh in, and still call that a strength, because it worked for a long time. Nedra calls it hyper-independence, and she says nobody’s born this way. You got pushed toward it, usually because you had some capability and handling everything yourself was the safest option available at the time.

If you’ve been searching how to delegate as a business owner while privately believing nobody can do it the way you can, that belief has a price tag. Gallup’s 2014 study of 143 Inc. 500 CEOs found the high delegators generated 33% more revenue than the ones who held on, and three out of four founders with employees scored limited or low on delegator talent. Nedra’s sequence for getting out from under it moves slower than most of us want, and she shuts down the version where you hand someone a job and announce that you trust them with all of it.

Then she goes after the self-made badge that so many women in this space wear with pride, which is where the episode turns, because the women who say they built it all themselves are usually the same ones who hit their first million with nobody to celebrate it. We also get into what to do when you hand something off and it goes sideways, and the point where your boundaries stop protecting you.
