In this episode, we’re going to talk all about creating smart Facebook and Instagram ads, and I can’t think of a better person to teach you a proven social media ad success system than my good friend, the one and only Rick Mulready.

If you’ve been with me for a while, you know him well. He’s the Regis to my Kelly and the king of social media ads. (And holds the title for the most guest appearances on my podcast — if there were a prize for that!)

  • [05:09] What objective do I choose to get people to register for my webinar? You have to make a choice! You have to choose between lead generation and conversion. Conversion is having people click on your ad and, as a result, land on your beautiful webinar registration page. The thank-you page is then used as custom conversion tracking. Easy peasy! Rick suggests using the conversion objective instead of the lead generation objective. 
  • [07:14] What's the most effective ad type? Brace yourself for our answer… ready? You have to test things out! I know, I know! You've heard it before and for good reason. Any ad can truly be effective, which is why you have to test the waters and see what works best for you. 
  • [09:50] Should I target other Facebook pages or cold audiences? Prioritize warm audiences first (you know, the loyal people on our list and who frequent your website), and then create a lookalike audience to target those who just haven't stumbled upon your magic yet. 
  • [13:27] Do you truly understand your target customer? Here's the truth… you need a holistic understanding of your target customer to do well with ads. There's no way around it. Once you know your target customer, your next step is to create sub-segments. 
  • [19:54] Why are ad costs rising? They are more advertisers than ever, and more competition equals higher ad costs. It's just the nature of the beast. Plus, things like holidays and current events, like the election play into the pricing of ads.
  • [23:08] What's CBO or campaign budget optimization? Essentially, it's the default way to set budgets, which you can set at the campaign level. The algorithm divides the budget by the ad performance. Gotta love the algorithm, right?
  • [28:33] How do I know my ads are working? Answer this… what's your cost per lead? You want to aim for at least a 20% conversion rate. And tools like Leadpages make it easy to track this by telling you your conversion rate. Our challenge for you is to focus on increasing rates and the consistency between the page and ad. Deal? 
  • [35:25] What's the deal with video? Here's an industry secret… try creating ads with mobile in mind first. If you choose to create an ad video, make sure you're creating it for the platform where your audience is consuming video.
  • [37:44] Why are my ads getting disapproved? The good news is that this happens to everyone, Rick and I included. The best we can all do is to review ad policies to keep up with changes. But the quick and dirty is this, don't make promises or insinuate people are struggling with certain things. If you speak to positivity and transformation, you should be good to go! 
  • [40:39] Do I need to run ads when I'm not launching? The answer is yes! A rock-solid strategy is to consistently run ads because it will build engagement and your list. Yes, please! Plus, Facebook rewards consistently running ads, which reduces the cost of your ads during launch time.
  • [43:23] Bonus tip: Mindset around testing. Keep testing (even when you don't feel like it) until you crack the code for your business and industry!
