#439: 9 Things I’d Do If I Started My Business All Over Again

March 3, 2022

Listen on…

Lessons I’ve learned that will save you time, money, and lots of stress

If you have recently taken the deep-dive into entrepreneurship, then this episode is for you.

Yes, you, friend! The brave soul with the beautiful vision, the passionate achiever who believes in their business with every ounce of their soul, and the one who’s willing to put in the hard work while also saving that sweet, sweet space for what really matters in life.

But let’s be real… entrepreneurship is really hard, especially when you’re just getting started. It’s totally normal to feel uncertain about yourself, or like you’re way in over your head, or that you keep spinning your wheels and just can’t get out of that cycle.

I’m here to tell you that those feelings are 100% a part of being an entrepreneur. Believe me, I’ve been there, and after 13 years of figuring it all out (with many mistakes along the way), I’ve had some time to look back and reflect on what it is that I would do differently with my business if I had to start over from scratch.

In no way am I saying that I would take back the mistakes that I’ve made — because I’ve learned so much from each and every one of them. But I am hoping that there will be something on this list that will save you time, money, and unnecessary stress from the get-go.

And what’s really exciting is that sooner than later, you’ll have your own list of things that you’ll be sharing with your own community on your very own podcast (more on why you should get your podcast started NOW in the episode.)

Grab a pen and paper (or your Full Focus Planner) and settle in to hear the top nine things that I would do differently in my business if I had to do it all over again.

Here’s a glance at this episode…

  • [02:40] This time of year is a great time to reassess and recalibrate. Go back and look at what did and didn't work for you in Q1. Now is the time to get clear about your goals and what you're going for next. Dive in!
  • [05:08] #1: Keep better records but don't get worked up over the numbers. Paying attention to metrics early on would have made me a lot more intentional as an entrepreneur.
  • [09:39] #2: Start your podcast right away. I wish I would have started my podcast earlier, and I wish I had been more consistent with it. Be strategic with your processes. It's never too early to create a plan.
  • [11:51] #3: I would have moved to a four-day work week way earlier than I did. It would just be a given. I wish I would have done it the first year of my business.
  • [15:26] #4: I would’ve had the courage to go after some amazing relationships that I wanted to cultivate early on. I was afraid to put myself out there and played small when I should have been pursuing genuine relationships.
  • [17:52] #5: I would have adopted a project management platform from day one. I also would have had discipline around that and made it part of how I run my business.
  • [21:46] #6: Focus more on my mental health. Taking care of your mental health should be in the top three things you do as an entrepreneur starting from day one. When your mental health is shaky, everything else is too.
  • [25:18] #7: Have better rituals. I would have had morning rituals, startup rituals, shutdown rituals, and all of the things that go along with the Full Focus Planner from the very beginning.
  • [29:57] #8: Learn to be a master of consistency. I'd make following through and being consistent one of my top character strengths. I'd follow through and do the things that I said I was going to do.
  • [32:16] #9: I would make DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) a top priority in my business. I'd create content through the lens of inclusivity.
  • [34:46] Action items: Commit to a few of the things you wish you would have done when you first started today. Which ones would you lean into? Remember — create a business that works for you, not the other way around.
