#601: Course Creation Pitfalls: Avoid the 5 Most Common Errors

August 24, 2023

Listen on…

These are the 5 biggest mistakes I see course creators make (plus ways you can avoid making them)

I’ve been in digital marketing for a while now, and over the years I’ve noticed that there are five errors that digital course creators commonly make when they’re first getting started.

Now, making mistakes is all a part of the entrepreneurial game. I’ve made plenty, and I know that I’ll keep making more. And what’s great is that every time you make a mistake, you can learn from it

But here’s the thing. The mistakes that I talk about in this episode are things that can seriously impact your ability to create a digital course that not only makes you a lot of money, but also makes an impact on people’s lives.

Now here’s the really good news. I’m also going to give you strategies to sidestep these mistakes so you don’t have to deal with the headache and stress that all-too-many people have made, including myself.

These are strategies that I cover in my signature course, Digital Course Academy, so you will be getting some of my paid content for absolutely free.

And just a word to the wise, this is a jam-packed episode, so if you haven’t already, be sure to bust out your notebook or a Google Doc so you can take some notes.

It’s my hope that by being aware of these pitfalls, and taking the steps to avoid them, you’ll feel confident as you move forward in your own digital course creation journey.

Enjoy!

Here’s a glance at this episode…

  • [07:18] Mistake #1: Telling yourself you need a rock solid idea before you ever get started.
  • [08:12] Look at the results you’ve gotten for yourself, for your clients, or the results you’ve gotten with a technique or method.
  • [12:05] Write down all of your ideas and start with the one that's the most exciting to you.
  • [13:05] Mistake #2: Believing that you have to know exactly how you are going to teach your content.
  • [16:19] Pinpoint the problem and the promise and start mapping out your course lessons.
  • [22:34] Mistake #3: Waiting until you have a huge email list before launching your course.
  • [25:48] You can pre-sell your course using social media. If no one buys it, just rework your idea and get back out there.
  • [29:13] Anytime you launch a course your email list grows.
  • [30:02] Mistake #4: Believing that you have to be a marketing and tech pro to create and launch a digital course.
  • [35:24] Mistake #5: Believing that creating a successful digital course is just too hard.
  • [37:34] You can continue to build on your work year after year and improve your course over time. Create one course and double down on it.
  • [42:54] Review: Think about what you can teach. Put together a road map. Start creating and sharing. Learn from someone that has gone before you.
