My YouTube channel has almost 2 million subscribers, but I felt like I hit a ceiling.
You work, work, work, work to make what you THINK is a great video, but if you’re not making super viral content that gets lots of views and clicks, it doesn’t matter.
It’s hard. And it felt that I was having to focus more on these numbers to be successful than creating great content sometimes.
I was tired of it and wanted to do something completely new. I saw people doing courses and thought, “Hey, that might be an option for me!”
Then I found out about DCA. I watched Amy’s livestream about the program, and I knew it was time to change something. (I even remember giving myself the little pep talk, “Ok. It’s now or never, Alexandra!”)
Creating this course was superrrrrr out of my comfort zone. So I made sure to follow the structure of DCA every day. I told myself that I would do everything to make it happen. No more excuses!
My course is watercolor painting for beginners. It’s called Roadmap to Watercolor Painting, and I even created a whole fun theme around it. I divided the course up into sections that I call trips, and each trip has several stops along the way. (It’s fun because now my students get into the language. They say things like, “Uh oh, I missed the plane” or “I’m on standby.”)
I was shy and nervous about pushing my course on my first launch because I’d never sold anything before, but I did it anyway!
When I started DCA, I created multiple lead magnets as Amy teaches to do and went from 14,000 subscribers to 37,000. Wow!
Then I launched…
I hosted 3 webinars and had a little more than 1,000 sign up to attend. The result: I only sold 11 courses. Disappointing…
But when I looked at one of the notes Amy has for students where she talks about some of her failures, she said something like, “I was also there. I was crying. I felt bad. But we can still do this.” That was sooo encouraging for me, and I decided to try again.
The result: I had 7,000 people sign up for the mini-challenge. I spent just $200 on Facebook ads and pushed it to my list and YouTube audience. I hosted 2 webinars that time and had 90 people sign up for my course! That was a $16,513 launch!!
(I’m so glad I never gave up!)
Even better, I love that I get to help my students add a creative hobby to their life that they can use to unwind, relax, and just have something to look forward to after a busy day.
For years I made free content. I wasn’t used to selling. But I pushed myself to feel uncomfortable and do some scary things, and it’s paid off.
I’m definitely going to keep making courses. This is only the beginning. Thank you, Amy!
Every journey starts with one step. If the questions “who am I to create a course?” or “where do I even start?” are coming up for you, know that they came up for every single successful course creator you see on this page.
Whether you’ve never owned a business before, you have no idea what your course would be about, or you’re totally allergic to tech — we ALL start somewhere. What matters most is your willingness to put one foot in front of the other.
Each of these course creators started with one thing: THE COURAGE TO TRY
