I had spent years as a high school English teacher, traveling speaker, and published author. But when I signed up for Digital Course Academy, I had a different idea inspired by my childhood. I wanted to create a course that helped families with goal setting. I started working through DCA and following all the steps to a T, doing my validation calls, writing outlines, etc.
As I was working on my course, a woman asked me if I would consider coaching her as she wrote her first book. And then another person asked, and another, and all of a sudden it clicked! Here I was working on a goal setting course for families, when what my audience really wanted was help writing their book.
Keep in mind this “light bulb moment” happened months after I started DCA and I had put all of this work into creating the goal setting course. Even though it felt like I was starting from scratch, I believed that what Amy taught would work for me, so I kept at it.
Instead of creating my new course first, I decided to do a pre-sell launch to make sure people would actually buy it. I outlined my course, started running Facebook ads (which I set up in one weekend, thanks to DCA!), and followed Amy’s webinar strategy exactly….
…and I ended up having a $17K pre-sell launch!
I was amazed. I was like, “Wow, what Amy is saying really works.”
There was no turning back now. I had a course to create, which I did, creating each module week by week. Since I had no equipment except for a cell phone and an old computer that shut down every 30 minutes, I filmed all of my course videos using my cell phone and a tripod.
After that first successful launch, I just kept doing it again and again, raising my prices each time.
That “starter course” (which I still sell) eventually led to me creating a high-ticket coaching program and a membership for my alumni. I’ve even hosted several live events. Since joining DCA, I’ve made somewhere in the neighborhood of $500K!
I’m proof that your first course idea may not be THE course idea — and that sometimes pivoting is actually the smartest thing you can do. When the right idea did finally come, I had all the tools, tips, strategy, and coaching I needed within DCA.
The freedom and flexibility I have as a course creator is unmatched. And the best part about it is that there are books now that would never have existed if people had not purchased my course.
