I moved to Los Angeles with nothing after my parents got divorced while in my early 20s. I lived in a tiny apartment, got a job on Craigslist, and worked hard to get a record deal as a singer/songwriter.
Now I live in a $3.5-million home in Beverly Hills that I bought—with my own money—for my family. And I don’t worry about the expense because my courses generate 5X more revenue than my monthly mortgage payments! Here’s how it happened:
By the time I was 24, I had already landed and lost a record deal (the label dropped me). I tried to get “day jobs,” but I just wasn’t happy. So, I looked into other ways to make a living with music. That’s when I discovered music licensing—which is when you write songs for TV, commercials, and film.
I did really well with it. In fact, the songs I wrote went on to be in ads for companies like Target, McDonald’s, Coca-Cola, and in TV shows like Grey’s Anatomy, One Tree Hill, and Pretty Little Liars.
One day, this woman I didn’t know reached out to me and said, “You know so much about music licensing and you’ve done so well for yourself. I’d love to learn from you, but I don’t live nearby. Would you ever consider teaching an online course?”
I didn’t know what an online course was. Legitimately. I’m a musician. I had never heard the words “email list,” “Teachable,” “Kajabi,” “webinar,” or “Infusionsoft.” I had NO idea what she was talking about. But she told me to look up Amy Porterfield, and thank GOD I did.
The first online course I ever took in my life was Amy’s “Digital Course Academy®️,” and at that time, I was pregnant with my third child—which gave me a fast-approaching deadline! I quickly grew my email list to 1,200 people, and 1,000 of them showed up to my first webinar!
On the webinar, I spoke from my heart, describing the course I had just created, “6-Figure Songwriting”! The result: I ended up generating $150,000 (just 3 weeks before my daughter was born)!
21 months later, my courses hit the 7 figures in sales mark and I have a book deal in the works and I have a podcast that makes 6-figures from ad sponsorships!
I get more work as an artist because of my courses and I have found so many amazing artists who are students and now getting incredible work.
But here’s the best part: my students have gone on to license their music to companies like Coors Light, Hyundai, McDonald’s, T-Mobile, TV shows like Younger, and even one of the Barbie movies. If it weren’t for Amy’s teachings and me creating this course, NONE of this would have happened because these students didn’t know what they were doing, and I didn’t have the time to teach each one of them over coffee.
My entire life has changed because of online courses, and more than that, I get to change the lives of my students, too!
