#575: Are You Willing To Start From Scratch? Why Your Capacity For Zero Is Crucial As An Entrepreneur

May 30, 2023

Listen on…

Your willingness to start from scratch as a business owner is crucial to finding long-term success — here’s why

If you’re considering starting a business, one of the things that you absolutely need to be prepared for is to start from the very bottom.

I don’t say that to be negative — I say it because all-too often, people go into entrepreneurship with rose colored glasses, and then get discouraged when they realize that they don’t have any social media followers or an email list that tumbleweeds could blow through.

When you’re first starting out in business, you’ve got to be OK with starting from scratch. And because you’re likely doing something that’s brand new to you, you’ve also got to be OK with not having the same clout that you might have had in your career.

Sure, you might have a ton of experience on your resume and an excellent track record — but you’ve probably never owned and operated a business before. And it’s a whole different ball game!

So that’s why it’s so important that as an entrepreneur you have a strong capacity for zero. You’ve got to be willing to start with nothing, get in the trenches, and do the hard work.

Now here’s the good news, sweet friend. You won’t be in this place forever! With time, effort, and the right strategies, your business is sure to grow.

But when you start in the right frame of mind, and know in your heart that things don’t happen overnight, you’ll be much better equipped to handle all of the ups and downs that come along with the wildly exciting ride of entrepreneurship.

In this episode, I’m diving into what it means to have a strong capacity for zero, and how you can strengthen yours. So pop in your earbuds, grab a beverage of your choice and enjoy!

Here’s a glance at this episode…

  • [03:59] How willing are you to start from zero? We have to have a high capacity for zero in order to put the ego aside.
  • [07:53] I'm starting a one-on-one coaching program, and it's a $10,000 offer. I've never done this before, and I have to be willing to say this might crash and burn.
  • [11:06] When you've achieved a lot of professional success, it can be really hard to go back to square one.
  • [12:48] When Oprah first started OWN, the ratings were terrible. She had to dig deep to be comfortable with being new at something.
  • [16:02] It takes a lot of work to go from just starting out, to having the business and money you want. The messy middle is full of challenges.
  • [20:12] It can help to create a plan B. If things don't work out, you still have a backup plan.
  • [22:00] The higher your capacity for zero, the more opportunities you have to succeed.
  • [22:49] Are you willing to start from zero? Are you willing to be an amateur? Are you willing to crash and burn and get back up?
