I knew I had dreams to do something bigger in life, but I had no idea what!
That was in 2015. I was raising 4 children and homeschooling them all. Though I loved the time at home with my kids, when I turned 36, I had this nagging feeling that it was time to pursue my own personal business dreams.
So, I registered them all for school for the coming fall… and that happened to come with a very expensive $18,000-a-year tuition bill.
That’s when I started my career hunt. I had been working for a decade in philanthropy and development but wanted to pursue something that I fully owned. My family had been gardening together over the last five years. And I loved it so much.
I thought to myself, “Is there any way I could start a business around gardening?” (After all, gardening was the center point of our family while I was homeschooling.)
That fall, I took a small refund check I had received from my child’s preschool and I launched my gardening consulting business with a mission to create 100 gardens in Houston. (And it took off!)
I started small but by the end of the year, Rooted Garden had made over $100k!
That’s when I started getting attention in other places outside of Houston. And that attention sparked a bigger dream to reach more people.
Rooted Garden continued to grow and in 2017, the business made more than $150,000 before the summer arrived.
While the growth was exciting… I was running from garden to garden most days and sacrificed taking care of myself to make the business work. And that’s how I found myself in the emergency room that spring.
This was my wake-up call! I knew I needed to do something different.
So I put my in-person business on hold while I figured it out, and that’s when I discovered Amy’s course. This was my inspiration to create a course so I could better leverage my time, create courses that could support and help my clients, and allow me to help others at all times, not just when I could physically be there.
I charged $97 for my first course. And I was charging $100 for an in-person consultation. And this was so exciting to me because my new course allowed me to reach more students and also offer a second tier of service to my in-person clients-they could learn from me at any time now.
As the course took off, a lot of people were telling me they wished they could do what I did and turn their passion for gardening into a business in their local city.
So I started using Amy’s method again and put my expertise about growing a garden consulting business into a program.
My first launch of this course brought in 35 students. And today, The Garden Coach Society has trained more than 750 gardeners around the world.
I’ve become totally course obsessed and have created a signature gardening course, Kitchen Garden Academy (more than 3000 students) and we now have an online membership called Gardenary 365 that provides all sorts of garden education all online.
Between all my courses combined, we crossed a million dollars in sales last year.
(While continuing to run my service-based business, Rooted Garden, remotely — which crossed a million dollars a year in revenue too!)
And you wanna know a secret? The reason we have been able to scale in the way we have is that we turn our internal processes and systems into courses to train new team members, too.
Looking back, there's no way I could have had this much success if it weren’t for DCA.

After staying at home for 4 years with my kids, I thought I had lost my career. To be able to come back to work and help so many people is an accomplishment I’m proud of.
And the fact that it’s provided my family with a life-changing income makes it even sweeter. I make more than enough money to bring my family on great vacations, buy a new family van, and pay for my girls' club soccer. With my business, I am able to handle all of those things and so much more.
It feels incredible to have this much impact and never have to worry about money. And it’s all thanks to DCA!
